AMMREN, UHAS & NMEP Unite to Mark World Malaria Day 2025
On April 23, 2025, stakeholders from across Ghana and beyond gathered virtually for a significant event marking World Malaria Day 2025. Organized by the Centre for Malaria Research at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), in collaboration with the Ghana National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMCP) and the African Media and Malaria Research Network (AMMREN), the webinar was held under the compelling global theme: “Malaria Ends With Us: Reinvest, Reimagine, Reignite.”
This year’s event brought together researchers, policymakers, health professionals, and advocates to reflect on Ghana’s progress in the fight against malaria and to strategize future interventions. The webinar aimed to inspire renewed commitment, foster innovation, and promote investment in malaria elimination efforts.
Keynote Speakers and Highlights
The session was chaired by Prof. Kwame Ohene Buabeng, Dean of the UHAS School of Pharmacy and Ag. Director of IHR, who emphasized the critical role academic institutions play in advancing malaria research and training future public health leaders.
The webinar featured insights from renowned experts in the field including:
Dr. Felicia Owusu-Antwi, National Professional Officer for Malaria, WHO Ghana, shared global and African updates on malaria interventions, stressing the need for continuous surveillance, resistance monitoring, and community involvement.
Dr. Keziah Malm, Programme Manager at NMEP, discussed Ghana’s malaria elimination strategies, recent gains, and the importance of reinvesting in proven tools while embracing innovation.
Dr. Matilda Aberese-Ako, Director of Centre for Malaria Research shared emerging research findings and highlighted the Centre’s contribution to building local capacity and conducting policy-relevant research.
Dr. Charity Binka, Executive Secretary of AMMREN, emphasized the power of media and advocacy in influencing public perception and political will towards malaria eradication.
Launch of the 6th Edition of the UHAS Malaria Newsletter
A major highlight of the event was the official launch of the 6th Edition of the UHAS Malaria Newsletter by Prof. Evelyn Korkor Ansah. The publication showcases recent research from UHAS, updates on malaria control efforts in Ghana, and thought pieces from partners committed to ending malaria.
The newsletter serves as a valuable resource for stakeholders in health, research, and policy, bridging the gap between scientific findings and practical action.
As malaria continues to threaten lives and livelihoods across Ghana, the webinar reinforced the urgency of scaling up efforts and embracing innovation. Participants were encouraged to reinvest in interventions that work, reimagine solutions using local expertise, and reignite passion across all sectors to drive collective action toward a malaria-free Ghana.
The event closed with a renewed commitment from all partners to sustain momentum and ensure no one is left behind in the fight against malaria.
