WORLD MALARIA DAY 2025 (WMD25) STATEMENT BY THE AFRICAN MEDIA AND MALARIA RESEARCH NETWORK (AMMREN)

PRESS STATEMENT
April 25, 2025 — ACCRA
World Malaria Day 2025

Theme: Malaria Ends with Us: Reinvest. Reimagine. Reignite.

The commemoration of World Malaria Day 2025 presents another critical opportunity for the global community to renew its commitment to end malaria. Under the theme “Malaria Ends with Us: Reinvest. Reimagine. Reignite.” This year’s campaign calls for bold investments, innovative tools, and revitalized political will to accelerate progress toward a malaria-free world.

The African Media and Malaria Research Network (AMMREN) urges all stakeholders—governments, development partners, researchers, the private sector, and the media—to intensify efforts to meet global targets, particularly the WHO Global Technical Strategy for Malaria goal of reducing malaria case incidence and mortality rates by at least 90%, and eliminating malaria in 35 countries by 2030.

AMMREN recognizes that while significant gains have been made in fighting malaria over the years, these efforts remain fragile. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) 2024 Annual Report, there were 263 million cases of malaria globally in 2023, resulting in approximately 597,000 deaths—with the African Region accounting for 95% of cases and 96% of malaria deaths. Most of these are among children under the age of five.

On this World Malaria Day, the African Media and Malaria Research Network (AMMREN) reaffirms its unwavering commitment to leveraging media as a pivotal tool in the fight against malaria.

AMMREN believes that a well-informed media landscape can drive behavioral change, promote the adoption of preventive measures, and hold stakeholders accountable. As we navigate the challenges of funding cuts and emerging health threats, the role of the media becomes even more critical in sustaining the momentum towards a malaria-free Africa.

We call upon media professionals to intensify their efforts in reporting on malaria-related issues, ensuring that the disease remains a priority on national and international agendas. Together, through persistent and informed media advocacy, we can accelerate progress and ultimately consign malaria to history.

AMMREN remains committed to leveraging the power of the media in partnership with researchers and scientists to amplify community voices, spotlight innovations, and demand action toward malaria elimination. Let us all remember: Malaria ends with us.

Signed

Dr. Charity Binka.

Executive Secretary, African Media and Malaria Research Network.
